India's MEITY Issues Advisory on Pre-Approval for AI Products

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) issued an advisory to internet intermediaries and platforms, though it has yet to be published on the MEITY website.

Under the IT Rules of 2021, the advisory mandates government authorization before introducing AI products and ensures platforms do not spread illegal content or AI models that could influence elections.

Key requirements include obtaining explicit government approval for under-tested AI technologies, using consent pop-ups for user alerts, and marking potentially misleading content with metadata for tracking.

This advisory primarily targets large social media platforms, signaling a move towards stricter AI regulation in India.
