Welcome to this week's edition of The Legal Wire!
This week the legal AI market demonstrated less speculation and more infrastructure. In Europe, Pandektes raised €13.5 million to build an AI-ready legal data layer across legislation, case law, and administrative rulings, while former Big Law lawyers backed new AI-native firms experimenting with flat-fee models. Opus 2 bought Bundledocs to expand its disputes platform, as legal tech consolidation continues to move toward fuller workflow coverage.
Clio acquired Learned Hand in its first direct step into court and judiciary AI, adding tools that help judges and clerks review filings, conduct research, and prepare draft orders. At the policy level, President Trump and major tech CEOs signed a one-page AI safety accord focused on audits, board oversight, internal controls, and dedicated safety teams. In Australia, OpenAI and Anthropic told a parliamentary inquiry they would back mandatory rules requiring AI companies to report data breaches caused by their agents.
Our feature this week follows that same build-versus-buy question from inside private funds practice. SmartEsq, co-founded by former Big Law partner Esther Chiang, is trying to rework the legal machinery behind fund formation and fund management, with tools that track obligations, surface source-backed answers, and compress work that can run into thousands of hours.

Legal Technology
Engineer Turned Funds Partner Turned Founder: Esther Chiang on Building SmartEsq
Esther Chiang has an unusual CV even by the standards of legal tech founders. She read electrical engineering and English literature at Stanford, spent time at Qualcomm, then went to law school. Fifteen years of private funds practice followed, first at Sidley Austin, then as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis and Paul Hastings. In 2025 she left private practice to co-found SmartEsq, a New York-based platform built specifically for the legal work that goes into raising and running private funds.
The platform is designed to sit across the whole fund lifecycle rather than solve a single document at a time. Its Summer 2026 release added a Fund Lifecycle and Task Tracker, an Obligations and Compliance Register that pulls ongoing commitments out of side letters and fund documents, and an expansion of Sandra, the company’s legal assistant, which now works across an entire fund and cites its answers back to source pages.
In paraphrasing Esther’s words regarding the arithmetic: forming a large private equity fund can take around 2,000 hours of legal work, and her ambition is to bring that closer to 400.
From Kirkland partner to pseudocode
The origin of SmartEsq is older than the company. Esther traces it back to 2015, the year she made partner at Kirkland & Ellis. The firm was experimenting with legal technology at the time, mostly conditional-logic document platforms. To Esther, whose engineering background ran deeper than most partners’, the technology was too rudimentary. She could imagine what a more sophisticated system might look like, but what she could not do in 2015 was build one. “I did not have the resources or the time to run neural network analysis myself. I remember thinking that perhaps one day, when the technology became more accessible, we could do it.”

The weekly ChatGPT prompt that will boost your productivity
Why it helps: Gives lawyers a simple way to use AI more effectively, turning document review into a faster, structured process while keeping verification and professional judgment in place.
I want to use a legal AI tool to review this material:
Material: [contract / policy / pleading / correspondence / transcript / other]
Goal: [summarize / spot risks / prepare advice / support redlines / extract actions]
Jurisdiction: [if relevant]
Key concerns: [list 2–3]
Create a short review plan that tells me:
1. What to ask the AI tool first.
2. What follow-up questions to ask.
3. What the lawyer must verify before relying on the output.
4. What final deliverable to request.
Keep it practical, concise, and focused on saving time without skipping legal judgment.
