New AI Security Guidelines Released by UK and US Cyber Agencies

On November 27, 2023, the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) published comprehensive AI Security Guidelines. These guidelines, developed in collaboration, aim to enhance the cybersecurity framework surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and ensure its secure design, development, and deployment. Endorsed by 17 additional countries, this initiative marks a significant step toward global AI security standards.

Comprehensive Approach to AI Security

The guidelines are structured around the AI system development lifecycle, divided into four distinct phases. This approach is intended to help developers integrate cybersecurity as a fundamental aspect of AI system safety, embedding it throughout the development process from inception to deployment.

Key Aspects of the Guidelines

Secure Design: The guidelines emphasize the importance of secure design, addressing the necessary trade-offs in system and model design. This ensures that AI systems are built with robust security measures from the ground up.

Development Practices: Recommendations include securing the supply chain, maintaining thorough documentation, and managing both asset and technical debt. These practices aim to safeguard the entire AI development ecosystem against potential vulnerabilities.

By providing a clear framework, the AI Security Guidelines help developers ensure that cybersecurity is an integral part of the AI development process, ultimately aiming to protect AI systems from emerging cyber threats.
